Siavash Cheraghipour Calls for Explanations over Rejected Films
Actor Siavash Cheraghi Pour praised the short film Dezhno at the 43rd Tehran International Short Film Festival and criticized the film selection process, calling for a convincing explanation for why certain films were not accepted.
Speaking to Kamyar Masoumi, Faranema’s reporter, Cheraghipour described Dezhno as one of the standout works he had seen during the festival. He praised the film’s distinctive approach to the chemical bombing associated with the Halabja tragedy and highlighted the achievement of a young filmmaking team from the Paveh region.
Cheraghipour said that although he had not yet watched all the works in the documentary section, Dezhno was a film he wanted to discuss after seeing it. In his view, the film uses a combination of documentary storytelling and dramatic reconstruction to address a historical event that has received less attention than the Halabja tragedy.
Praise for Dezhno and Young Filmmakers
Directed by Sina Valdbeigi, Dezhno is competing in the documentary section of the 43rd Tehran International Short Film Festival. The film focuses on the chemical bombing of Nowdesheh, a town in Kermanshah Province, on March 17, 1988, one day after the chemical attack on Halabja.
“Dezhno” is the historical name of Nowdesheh. The film seeks to bring attention to the experiences of local residents whose suffering has received less public recognition amid the widespread focus on Halabja.
Cheraghipour also praised the enthusiasm and energy of young filmmakers from different parts of Iran, describing their participation as an important factor in the festival’s continued vitality.
Criticism of the Festival Venue
Cheraghipour also expressed dissatisfaction with the festival’s previous move to Iran Mall. He said that, in his experience, the scale and layout of the complex did not provide the focus and accessibility he expected from a film festival, and he preferred the atmosphere of Mellat Cinema Complex.
He also pointed to heavy traffic around the festival venue as an ongoing challenge for attendees and film professionals.
The 43rd Tehran International Short Film Festival was held at Mellat Cinema Complex in Tehran from October 17 to 22, 2026.
Cheraghipour Seeks Explanations for Rejected Films
In another part of the interview, Cheraghipour said that two films in which he had participated were not selected for the festival. He added that he expected to receive a convincing explanation, at least regarding one of those films.
He argued that simply referring to the festival’s usual procedures for accepting or rejecting films was not a sufficient response. In his view, films should be assessed more carefully and fairly, and decisions concerning rejected works should be open to meaningful explanation.
Cheraghipour emphasized the need for a more considered approach to films, suggesting that the issue extends beyond the acceptance or rejection of a single work to the way filmmakers and their efforts are treated.
