Leili Aaj Prepares Female-Centered Drama About Families of Dena Warship Victims
Faranema reports that Iranian filmmaker Leili Aaj is developing a new feature film centered on the families of those killed aboard the Iranian Navy warship Dena. Tentatively titled “Tavalod-e Yek Najibzadeh” (“Birth of a Nobleman”), the project is being designed as an emotional, female-centered story about the lives, waiting and grief of the sailors’ wives and families.
The screenplay is currently being written and developed.
Leili Aaj is attached as writer and director, while Saeed Elahi is producing the film.
The filmmakers plan to begin principal photography in early Mehr 1405, or late September 2026.
If production remains on schedule, the team hopes to complete the film in time to seek participation in the 45th Fajr Film Festival.
The Political-Ideological Organization of the Islamic Republic of Iran Army has agreed to serve as a principal production partner.
Dena Through the Eyes of the Families
According to Saeed Elahi, the film is not intended primarily as a military reconstruction of the incident.
Instead, the story will focus on the women and families whose lives were transformed by the loss of the Dena crew members.
The wives of the sailors, and their experiences of waiting, absence and grief, are expected to form the emotional center of the film.
This approach also continues a pattern in Aaj’s work, in which female protagonists are placed at the heart of stories connected to major political and social events.
How the Project Began
The idea emerged following the attack on the Dena warship during what Iranian sources refer to as the Ramadan War.
Iranian official and domestic media reports have stated that the attack killed 104 members of the Islamic Republic of Iran Navy.
The incident and the experiences of the sailors’ families subsequently became subjects of several commemorative and cultural programs in Iran.
Aaj later developed an initial idea focusing specifically on the families left behind.
Discussions about producing the project followed, eventually leading to the involvement of the Iranian Army’s Political-Ideological Organization.
“Birth of a Nobleman”
The project has previously been announced under the title “Tavalod-e Yek Najibzadeh.”
Aaj developed the initial concept and is currently working on the screenplay.
While development is underway, several key production details have not yet been announced, including the cast, principal crew and exact shooting schedule.
The filmmakers have said that preparations are moving ahead with the goal of beginning production in early autumn.
Racing to Reach Fajr
The planned production schedule leaves the filmmakers with a relatively limited period to complete shooting and post-production before the upcoming Fajr Film Festival.
Elahi has said that the team hopes to begin shooting in early Mehr and prepare the film for the festival.
He has also called on other cultural institutions active in cinema to participate in the production.
According to the producer, the story of the Dena families has the potential to become a significant contemporary Iranian film and requires a production scale appropriate to its subject.
Leili Aaj’s Second Feature
“Birth of a Nobleman” will be the latest feature project from Leili Aaj following her feature debut “Colonel Soraya.”
Before moving into feature filmmaking, Aaj built much of her career in theater.
“Colonel Soraya” premiered at the 41st Fajr Film Festival and centered on a mother whose child had joined the People’s Mojahedin Organization of Iran and was living at Camp Ashraf.
Aaj received an Honorary Diploma for first-feature directing at the festival and also received the special Goharshad Award for the film.
She later directed the 15-episode television series “Mrs. Yamamura,” about the Japanese mother of an Iranian martyr from the Iran-Iraq War. Filming on that production has been completed.
Her new feature therefore continues her interest in female-centered narratives connected to major episodes in contemporary Iranian history.
Aiming for the 45th Fajr Film Festival
Producer Saeed Elahi has previously worked across media, cultural management and film production.
He also participated in the 42nd Fajr Film Festival as a producer on the film “Miro.”
Aaj and Elahi now hope to bring their new project to the festival’s 45th edition.
However, the intention to submit the film does not mean it has already been selected for the festival. Once completed, the project will still have to go through the festival’s official submission and selection process.
Whether “Birth of a Nobleman” can meet its ambitious production timetable and reach Fajr will become clearer after filming begins.
