Documentary Filmmakers Call for Return of Seized Equipment
Faranema reports, the Iranian Documentary Filmmakers Association has sent a letter to President Masoud Pezeshkian calling for the prompt return of professional equipment and property belonging to documentary filmmakers that, according to the guild, were seized during security-related inspections or proceedings.
The association announced on September 6, 2026, that the letter followed reports received from several of its members regarding professional equipment that had not been returned.
According to the association, in some cases restrictions and related proceedings had already ended, and inventories of the seized items had been formally recorded, yet the property had still not been returned to its owners.
More Than Personal Property
The association stressed that cameras, storage devices and other equipment used by documentary filmmakers are not merely personal possessions but essential professional tools and investments built up over years of work.
It specifically highlighted hard drives that may contain raw footage from productions in progress, commissioned projects or other materials connected to professional and financial commitments.
The association argued that prolonged loss of access to such material can interrupt production and make it difficult for filmmakers to meet contractual obligations.
Filmmakers may remain legally and professionally responsible for completing a project even when the equipment or footage required to do so is no longer available to them, the statement noted.
Appeal to President Pezeshkian
The Documentary Filmmakers Association cited Article 22 of the Constitution of the Islamic Republic of Iran, which addresses protections concerning individuals’ property, rights and occupations.
It also referred to Articles 113 and 121 concerning the responsibilities and constitutional oath of the president.
The guild called on Masoud Pezeshkian to instruct the relevant authorities to review the cases involving documentary filmmakers’ property.
It requested that equipment for which there is no longer a legal necessity for continued retention be returned to its owners without delay.
Where authorities determine that an item must continue to be held, the association said the owner should be informed of the legal basis for the decision, the authority retaining the property and its current status.
Guild Offers Documentation
The association concluded by saying it was prepared to submit documented cases involving individual members for further review.
The appeal highlights a broader professional concern within documentary filmmaking: access to equipment and recorded material can directly affect a filmmaker’s livelihood, contractual responsibilities and ability to continue working.
